Mud logging that
thinks for itself.
MudMaster is a cloud-native mud logging workspace built into the GeoMaster platform. It records the full surface channel set and goes further — computing kick scores, MSE, d-exponent, and drilling mode in real time, with LWD curves arriving on the same WITSML stream.
Town-based operations geologists and the operator's office see the same live screens as the mud logger at the wellsite. That remote visibility is what a legacy standalone mud logging unit can't offer.
Three roles. One live data stream.
MudMaster is designed from the start for the full wellsite team — not just the mud logger's unit.
On-site mud logger
- Real-time gas shows: total gas, C1–C5 chromatography, wetness ratios
- Drilling mechanics: WOB, RPM, torque, SPP, ROP, hook load
- Kick detection score (0–100) with four alert levels: Watch / Probable Kick / Kick
- Automated trip and bit-run detection
Wellsite geologist
- LWD correlation: GR, resistivity, density-neutron, sonic — live on the same stream
- Depth-indexed LWD layout (GR 0–150 gAPI, resistivity 0.2–2000 Ω·m, RHOB+NPHI overlay)
- Formation tops and marker overlays
- Gas ratios for fluid type detection
Drilling engineer / DDO
- MSE (Mechanical Specific Energy) for bit efficiency monitoring
- d-exponent and corrected d-exponent for pore pressure indication
- Drilling mode detection: drilling / sliding / rotating / tripping
- Kick score composite with primary + secondary indicator weighting
What the mud logger sees
Time-indexed tracks rendered side by side, with live data appended via WebSocket as new points arrive. Four seeded layout templates — operators can build custom layouts via the layout editor.
Depth & ROP
Bit depth and penetration rate — the master reference track. m/hr and min/m display.
Drilling Mechanics
WOB, RPM, torque, SPP — four-curve view of the surface mechanical state.
Mud Properties
MW in/out, flow rate, temperatures, pit volumes (pit_1, pit_2, trip tank), ECD calculated.
Gas Shows
Total gas plus C1–C5 chromatography on log scale — gas spans 4–5 orders of magnitude.
Drilling Mode
Automated mode detector: drilling / sliding / rotating / tripping. Context for everything else.
LWD / Wireline
GR, resistivity (log scale), RHOB+NPHI overlay, formation tops and marker overlays.
The computed intelligence layer
Traditional mud logging units record data. MudMaster computes — in real time, on every update cycle. This is the layer that conventional contractors don't provide.
Kick Detection
0–100 composite score from three indicator layers: primary (pit gain, MW delta, ECD drop), secondary (rolling-baseline changes in SPP, ROP, torque, d-exp, total gas). Four alert levels — no kick, watch, probable kick, kick.
MSE
Mechanical Specific Energy calculated in real time. Flags inefficient drilling before it shows up in ROP — bit balling, formation change, or equipment issues.
D-exponent
D-exponent and corrected d-exponent (Dc) for pore pressure indication. Trend deviation alerts the mud logger to potential overpressure before a kick develops.
Drilling Mode
Automated classification of the rig state every update cycle. Separates drilling from sliding from rotating from tripping — context that makes every other curve readable.
Trip Detection
Bit-run and trip boundaries detected automatically. Overlaid on all tracks so performance comparisons are instant, no manual annotation.
ML Roadmap
Isolation Forest anomaly detection → Random Forest (DataDRILL dataset) → LSTM-FCN. Driller confirm/dismiss feedback as the labeling mechanism. Pipeline designed, not yet in production.
Full surface channel set
Stored in columnar JSONB architecture keyed by mnemonic — every channel queryable, replayable, and exportable.

Roadmap: Lithology / cuttings description module is not yet in the build. If your workflow requires a full conventional mud log with lith column, discuss timeline with our team — it is on the roadmap, not in the current release.
Run it alongside your current mud logging unit.
MudMaster is operational in shadow mode — real data, real calculations, no operational dependency. The ideal entry point is a validation pilot on a single well where your mud logging contractor continues as normal and MudMaster runs in parallel.
Your team compares kick scores, MSE trends, and gas show quality against the contractor's output. No risk, no commitment.
